New Year, New Decor | My First Home

I recently graduated college and moved into my first place, on my own, with my younger brother. It has been scary but also really exciting! I finally have my own place that I get to decorate however I want. I absolutely love home decor and have dreamed of creating an aesthetic for my home for so long. Since I am a recent college graduate, just starting out in life, I am on a budget. So I thought I would share with any other young adults out there, some cute and well priced items that I have bought or plan to buy! (This post contains affiliate links.)

Living Room

The living room is the most important room to me. This is the room where game nights with friends and family happen. I want it to be cozy and open. My living room has dark hardwood flooring and my recliner and couch are also a dark brown. So you can see how this might make the living room seem a bit dark. So I have started adding things to brighten up the area!

A white faux fur blanket to drape over the back of the recliner. I wasn’t able to find the exact blanket I have but I did find this one on amazon at a reasonable price.

Now in my living room I am trying to work off the brown so I can brighten the place up. So I have decided to go for white, darkish blue(close to navy) bits of grey and gold. For the couch I tried to find a white and blue long throw to drape over the back. I could not find the one I have in my house, because it was a gift and I am not sure where it came from, but I do have a link to a nice throw that I think would be nice for anyone going the same route as me.

The tricky part about furnishing my home has been finding rugs/carpeting to brighten up the room and really pull everything together. Eventually, after searching for what felt like forever, I found the perfect rug. It is this Safavieh Evoke Collection EVK270A Vintage Navy and Ivory Area Rug (3′ x 5′)

Small Accents

I love the idea of having plants in my home, but I definitely cannot keep them alive. So I invested in some fake plants around my home. I think having the small succulent plants as accents really brings a freshness to the space.

I also have some floating shelves in the shape of triangles that I decided to place my plants inside of.

Eventually I would like to add more gold accents onto my walls. Here are a few things that I, personally, am looking forward to adding to my home decor!

That is all the home decor I have for right now! As I furnish my home I will make more posts or keep updating this one. Leave me a comment and let me know what your favorite piece of decor in your house is. Whether its wall art or a fake plant. I wanna know!

  1. Through your writing I can hear your excitement to have your own space! I felt the same when my boyfriend and I moved in together, I couldn’t wait to get decorating and buying pieces to make our new home our own and after two years we’re still getting there! I love the floating shelves, I have a set of them in my bedroom and they’re so handy for keeping my hair and make-up products organised and out of the way.

  2. Decorating a new room or home is SO fun. I love your idea of navy accents. In our first bedroom I painted the whole thing navy an was IN LOVE with it. Pretty dark, but I liked it for the room we were sleeping in. Enjoy the process!

  3. Congratulations!! We’ve been in our apartment for almost two years now and I STILL get excited for changing decor with the seasons. Our place is relatively small – I’m going to be out of control when we upgrade to a house haha.
